Africa suffers a disproportionate share of social, economic, and political disasters and the suffering seems relentless as tales of military takeover, civil wars, economic debt, and famine mount. It is evidently not a continent at peace. As a whole, the countries of Africa have a reputation for undemocratic and corrupt governments where coups d’état are rife and military government is the norm. All too easily, bad governments are blamed for the economic, social, and political problems which each African Country faces.(VOA)

The problems which follow from employing a composite index of coups, including unsuccessful coups and plots as well as successful ones, has been an issue and a big challenge to the Agribusiness Economy. The society is not able to freely do farming on their lands due to the wars that cause people to seek asylum in neighboring countries. The production and sustainability of agricultural activities is widely affected.

Agribusiness can suffer significantly and negatively from instability and coup d’état scenarios, both locally and internationally. Let’s use the example of Gabon, a nation in Central Africa that has already suffered political unrest and coup attempts, to demonstrate this effect. Currently there is a Coup d’état happening at Gabon where the military have taken hostage the President, hence the country is thrown to political unrest and uncertainty to the society. For the longest time the country has been stark on social and economic inequality. Many Gabonese citizens struggle to make ends meet, complaining of lack of access to quality health care and inadequate education system. The President through a social media video was seen trying to seek help from the International family. The UN Chief has condemned the military coup and called for a means to resolve the post electoral crisis.(UN news, 30th August 2023)

Disruptions of Supply Chains

Supply chain interruptions are frequently caused by political unrest and coup attempts. These events also cause disruptions in the transportation and logistics industries. The flow of agricultural goods from farms to markets and export destinations may be impacted by this. It may be difficult for agribusinesses to operate effectively if roads are blocked, ports are shut, or transportation is dangerous.

Reduced Export Potential

To fund its economy and produce cash, Gabon, like many other nations, depends on the export of agricultural products. Political unrest can obstruct these export routes, resulting in lost revenue for the nation and its agricultural industry. Additionally, it could damage Gabon’s standing as a trustworthy business partner.

Loss of Human Capital

The success of agribusiness depends on having a skilled workforce. When there is instability, educated and competent workers may leave the country in search of more secure conditions. The growth of the agriculture industry may be hampered by this loss of human capital.

Weakening of Governance and Regulation

Political unrest might make it more difficult for the government to support and control the agriculture industry. This could lead to a lack of enforcement of property rights,

environmental laws, and quality standards, which could have an adverse effect on the sector’s long-term survival.

Governments and stakeholders can endeavor to create transparent and stable political environments, enhance institutions, and support agricultural development programs to lessen the detrimental effects of political instability on agribusiness. In order to encourage investment and economic stability in areas prone to political instability, international organizations and foreign governments can also offer support and incentives.
